Группа "Beastie Boys", нарезавшая на своей ранней стадии откровенный хардкор (то бишь панк-рок), появилась на нью-йоркской сцене в 1981 году. В оригинальный состав вошли Адам Яух (р. 5 августа 1965; бас), Кэйт Шелленбах (ударные), Джон Берри (гитара) и Майкл Даймонд (р. 20 ноября 1966; вокал). Отыграв первый концерт на дне рождения Берри у него дома, команда довольно быстро переместилась на такие площадки как "CBGB" и "Max's Kansas City", где выступала вместе с "Bad brains" и "Reagan youth". Уже в 1981-м вышел первый EP "Pollywog Stew", но дальше дело застопорилось.
В начале 1983-го Берри сменил Адам Хоровиц (р. 31 октября 1967), при участии которого группа записала первый трек в стиле рэп, "Cookie Puss". Где-то в это же время на горизонте нарисовался Рик Рубин, спровоцировавший окончательный переход "Beastie Boys" от хардкора к хип-хопу. Шелленбах не понравилась смена курса (а также гигантский надувной пенис, появлявшийся на сцене) и она ушла из "Beasties".
Оставшаяся троица вскоре после этого на рубинском лейбле "Def Jam" выпустила сингл "Rock Hard", в котором использовала сэмплы из песни AC/DC "Back in black". Первые полноценные гастроли "Beastie Boys" провели на разогреве у Мадонны в ее североамериканском туре. За ними последовал "Raising Hell Tour" в компании с Run DMC и подобными артистами. Наконец, в 1986-м группа выпустила свой дебютный лонгплей. "Licensed to ill" стал первым рэп-альбомом, занявшим в "Billboard" высшую позицию, на которой продержался пять недель. Помимо высоких продаж "Licensed to ill" был примечателен тем, что на нем отметился гитарист "Slayer" Керри Кинг. Масштабный тур в поддержку альбома сопровождался множеством скандалов, но это лишь подогревало интерес к "Beastie Boys".
В 1988-м парни разругались с Риком Рубином и сбежали от него на "Capitol records". Первой пластинкой на новом месте стала "Paul's Boutique". Работа заметно отличалась от "Licensed", и в ней среди сэмплов можно было найти ретро, фанк и психоделию. Журнал "Rolling stone" сравнил этот релиз в мире рэпа с "Pet Sounds" и "Dark Side of the Moon" в роке.
На альбоме "Check your head" группа пошла еще дальше и в хип-хоповые ритмы замесила фанк, джаз и хардкор. Сопровождаемый кучей хитов, диск занял хорошие позиции в "Billboard" и стал дважды платиновым. В 1994 году помимо очередной рэп-работы, "Ill Communication", музыканты выпустили сборник ранних вещей, "Some Old Bullshit". Чуть позже "Beastie Boys" вновь отдали дань своим панковским корням, выбросив на рынок миньон "Aglio e Olio". В том же 1994-м коллектив вместе со "Smashing Pumpkins" возглавил тур "Lollapalooza", а в 1996-м неожиданно для всех выпустил коллекцию соул-джаз-фанковых инструменталов "The In Sound From Way Out!".
К своему излюбленному хип-хопу "Beastie Boys" вернулись в 1998-м с диском "Hello Nasty", отхватив за него парочку "Грэмми". Ожидание следующего студийного альбома растянулось на целых шесть лет и было компенсировано выпуском двухдискового сборника "The Sounds of Science". Столь долгое молчание объяснялось политической активностью членов команды и ведением дел на собственном лейбле, "Grand Royal".
ИМХО -творчество группы заслуживает внимания хотя бы из-за интересного микса и своеобразных аранжировок песен.Чего только стоит Eugene`s Lament, Sabrosa,Rhymin & Stealin, No Sleep till Brooklin
